Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a proven treatment that deals with the way a
person is thinking about something that is causing that individual to live
their life in a way that is distressing to themselves and/or their
relationships to others around them. The
counselor utilizing CBT will be assisting the client in searching for problem
issues in order to evaluate the thought process connected with those issues, to
test the beliefs around them, and to explore alternative ways to think about the
situation that will produce progress toward a desirable goal. Studies have
shown that CBT has produced very favorable results in dealing with a variety of
problems. CBT has been shown to have very positive results in treating depression
and in many cases has been shown to be as useful as antidepressant mediations.
There have also been very favorable results using CBT in dealing with the fear
associated with anxiety disorders and panic attacks. CBT is not the only
therapy method I utilize however it is the method I lean toward because of its
proven success in so many areas.
Solution-focused Brief Therapy as a
therapeutic technique focuses on the possible solutions to a problem more than
the problem itself. This method assists the client in identifying what they believe would make
their life better. Understanding that most people have previously solved many
problems in their life, it also assists the client in
developing their thoughts on what a solution to their current problem might be.
If a client cannot point to a previous solution, then an exception to the rule
is looked for and explored as to why it was an exception. Strategies are then
explored in order to deal with the issues.
While these are quite simplistic explanations of the two therapeutic
strategies, they give you a basic idea of the way I work in a counseling
session. As I said before, these are not the only therapy methods I use in
counseling, but I find that I often use a combination of
these two in assisting clients toward strategies to create the life they would
like for themselves.
